Pingo Trail

A Pingo found in Thompson

The Chequers Inn is tucked away in the picturesque village of Thompson, a historic village with a fascinating ancient past and many special features. Thompson is one of 13 villages that along with the town of Watton make up the Wayland area.

The wider surrounding area, known as the Brecks, is one of the great natural areas of Britain spanning across Norfolk and Suffolk in the heart of the East of England. The Brecks is important for its unique landscape and wildlife that has been shaped by its soils, climate and human land-use. It is one of the driest parts of Britain.

The Brecks contains the largest lowland forest in the UK, Thetford Forest and Kings Forest, which offers miles of tranquil forest trackways and paths to explore, making it perfect for walking, cycling and horse riding. It is also steeped in history dating back as far as Neolithic times and is famed for its Pingos which are circular ponds created during the Ice Age.
